Perseverance of the Saints

September 29, 2012

“The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” Brennan Manning

I’m starting a brief series on some observations I’ve made about religion, Christianity specifically, in the U.S.A. To start out I’d like to make it clear that I am a Christian with a reformed, conservative, Protestant view of scripture. This post we’ll be looking at one of the five points of Calvinism, perseverance of the Saints.
It seems to me this is an idea that is constantly taken to the extreme. A lot of people think this simply means “once a Christian always a Christian.” While this idea of not being able to fall from grace is part of it, it is not the whole of it. This doesn’t give you the freedom to say your saved so it’s ok to live like the devil. Christianity bears fruit and we are to be known by that fruit(that’s a whole other discussion there). Perseverance of the Saints isn’t a reason to say, “nothing can make me not be saved so I’m gonna live a life of sin.” The key to this idea seems, to me, not to rest just in a stagnant preservation of the saved, but in an active persevering nature of Christians to strive after their savior and trust in him for salvation and know that salvation cannot be taken from them. We see the idea of persevering in the faith when Paul compares it to a race. He says we must persevere and strive for the goal. This isn’t Calvinists giving a ticket to do what you want, but a response to the Arminians of the time who said a person could be genuinely saved and lose that salvation and an encouragement to push on in your faith because nothing can take the salvation paid for by Jesus away from you. How wonderful our salvation doesn’t rest on what we have done and do daily, but on on what Jesus has done for us. I’m a fickle, flip-floppy person. I change my mind all the time. How great that my wishy-washy nature is not what my salvation depends on, but it rests on Jesus’ work and a God who is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow, who doesn’t change his mind or flip-flop back and forth!
So, if you’re wondering why True Christianity is dying out maybe its because so many people get this idea wrong and give lip service to God but life service to themselves. They figure they go to church once or twice a week and they said the prayer so now they can do what they want and God will forgive them. While God is a forgiving God, James tells us in chapter two of his book in the Bible that faith apart from works is dead. I’m not talking about works righteousness here, but the good works that are produced by a true saving faith and transforming of our hearts. So, if you claim to be a Christian but you live like the devil, please stop giving Christians a bad rep.

iOS 6 and some cool music

September 27, 2012

So, iOS 6 Is out, as all of us who don’t lie under rocks know and I for one love it. I think it streamlines a lot of things. A lot of people have talked about this already and told you all the reasons you should update to it so I’m gonna tell you the things I think are messed up. First, the native YouTube app is gone. There is a free available and it seems t work well but it is nay optimized for the iPhone, not the iPad. Second, swipe delete of songs only works when iTunes Match is not on. That wouldn’t be a problem if iTunes Match now totally replace any music you have one your device. So you turn it off to delete a song then turn it back on to link t your music on your computer and you have to download all your music to your device. It’s may have been a glitch on my device but that’s a pretty messed up glitch. Is a pain to try t go through and download all your music to your wi-if device so it is able to be played when your not hooked up to the Internet. So, those are the main downsides I’ve found to iOS 6.
I’d also like to mention a guy I’ve supported on kick starter named Benjamin Hofer. You can check out some of his music for free from his bandcamp site. He’s got just 7 more days and less then $500 to go to reach his goal. If you like his stuff and can, throw some love his way via backing him or at least telling others about him.
Finally this morning I have a sad announcement. My music I’m uploading to noisetrade isn’t going to be up by the end of this month as I was hoping. I’ve ha a lot of crazy stuff come up in my life the past two week and I’ve only been able to record stuff one time for about an hour. Also, the process of copywriting my music is something I didn’t think of until this past week and looks to be a lot of virtual paper work. I’m still getting some of my stuff out there but it will be by the middle of October. I HATE to delay, but that’s the truth. My life has been hectic.
Well, that’s all I’ve got for you. I hope you have a super day. If you enjoy my posts, please tell people about my blog. Even if you don’t, share your hate with friends so they can read it and make fun of it too. Hopefully I’ll have another observations blog later this week. See ya!

Animals in Fall

September 21, 2012

So, the last few days I e been waking up about an hour before my alarm goes off. I haven’t been able to go back to sleep because animals have been going CRAZY! Birds are tweeting before the sun comes up, dogs are barking like mad beasts, and cats are sounding like they are dying the most horrible death imaginable doing whatever that noise is they do. It’s not even daylight out. It’s an hour before sunrise. What is their problem? Go back to sleep! Lets look at this in parts.
First off, birds; why are you going tweet crazy? It may be true that

the early bird gets the worm

but if you’re hunting you ought to be quiet so you can sneak up on your prey. If I were a worm or bug I’d be like,”there goes the birds tweeting, time to hide.”
Dogs, I love them, but something happens to them in the Fall. They go bark and play crazy. They say its the cooler weather making them feel frisky. I say that’s fine, but incessant barking, especially before sunrise, is uncalled for. Birds we can’t do much about because of laws. Dogs are a different story. Here’s a crazy idea dog owners, don’t let your dogs bark like crazed, wild, insane beasts. Be a good, responsible owner and do something about your dog’s barking. It’s your responsibility. My dog lives inside because 1) he’d find a way to escape the back yard and 2) he’d bark like a mad beast. I’m not saying a dog should never bark. Dogs chase things, dig, sniff, and bark, it’s what they do, but there is no reason to let it go into the realm of insane, incessant, boredom barking.
Finally, what’s perhaps the worst noise of all, cats doing that thing. You know what I’m talking about. The thing where it sounds like they’ve been thrown in a shredder or blender. It’s terrible. Why on earth does any animal have to make this noise? There cannot be any good reason for it. This is another one that something could be done about. Owners, don’t let your cats wander about.
Either be a good pet owner or don’t have a pet. We need some kind of pet ownership licensing board to determine if people are just straight up too dumb to be allowed to own pets responsible enough to be pet owners. Well, that’s what I’ve got to say about that. To sum, up in case I lost you mid rant, don’t be a jerky pet owner. Enjoy the cooler weather while it lasts:)

Hump day

September 19, 2012

Well, it’s Wednesday morning. In a few hours well all be over the hump of the week. It’s been a different week for me. Monday it rained s I spent a good portion of the day typing up inventory. Then Tuesday I got a call asking if I wanted to switch my day off from Wednesday to Tuesday. So I did and spent the day paying bills and cleaning my office. I did a lot in my office, but there is so much stuff that still needs to be done and the ceiling fan needs to be installed. I got kind of depressed with how much I had done and how little of a dent it made, but I had to remind myself that you just have to keep on keeping on. If you give up it will only get worse. Then Tuesday night I had a meeting at church that was really interesting and good. That brings us to today, Wednesday. The middle of the week. The day that seems to drag on forever sometimes. Well, I want to let you know that you can make it through the day and the rest of the week. Just keep pushing on plugging away at all you have going on at school or work and you will make it to the weekend. It’s within sight. We just need to push through the slow times and rough situations and we will all make it. I’ve run out of time, but I just wanted to be sure and get an encouraging word out there this morning. Hopefully I’ll get another post squeezed in this week and it will be a little more exciting.

Now playing

September 13, 2012

So, just wanted to do a blog about some stuff you should check out. First off, my friend Wendell Kimbrough is an amazing musician and you really should check him out at his website. Not only can you see what he’s up to, but you can link to his latest album which can be downloaded for free on noistrade. Take a listen, you’ll thank me. I’ve played guitar with a lot of different people over the years, and Wendell is definitely one of the very best. Not only is he naturally talented, but he works very hard to grow his talent. I can’t help but be in awe of his talent and respect his determination.
Speaking of talent, I’ve been listening to a lot of Simon & Garfunkel both as a duo and on their own. What skill and awesomeness. I love their harmonies and Simon’s tempo and key changes and how Garfunkel’s voice just flows through it all. You should check out The Singer by Garfunkel.
I’ve also caught up with my The Courtesy Laugh by Joseph Craven and some others I haven’t met. It’s fun, funny stuff. Listen and you will be addicted.
Finally, I’d like to let you in on the fact that I’m working on writing and polishing enough original songs to make my first serious home recorded album. Along with said album I’m, Lord willing, going to be doing some shows around the Jackson metro area. If you know somewhere you’d like me to play, let me know. Maybe this isn’t the place for this, but if you can’t shamelessly promote yourself on your own blog then where can you? I’m getting my office/studio into recording mode this weekend so I can really get down and dirty. I’ll probably put some stuff up on noistrade by the end of this month.
If you have anything you think I should check out, leave me a comment.

It’s hard being the nice guy. You know the one. The guy that has tons of friend girls but nobody wants him as a boyfriend. He tries to move a good friendship into that other realm of dating but always ends up getting some form of the “just friends” speech. And who is it that attracts these girls who seek the advice of a nice guy? Well, it’s the bad boys; the boys who will break their heart. Why you ask? Because they think they can change them.
But, this isn’t about the crazy things pre-teen and teenage and even twenty-something girls do. This is about those nice guys. Those who are “just friends” and are real friends who stand by their friend girls just waiting to one day be noticed. To all of you reading this I want to let you know that chivalry isn’t dead. It is alive because we keep it alive. Don’t give up. I was like you and I despaired, but then I met a girl who wanted a best friend to go through life with not a work in progress to fix up. I married that girl over 2 years ago now and it’s been awesome! There’s hope for the nice guys. You won’t finish last. There is someone out there for you.
I feel I must say I wrote this thinking about guys particularly, but I know there are girls out there in the same place. This goes to you too. There is hope. Be patient. You will be seen for what you are.

On another note...

This is about my struggle to confront my fears of changing my direction all for a better life.
